Project
Home Addition, Sophia Street, St. Andrews
The homeowners loved their location in St. Andrews, but the layout no longer suited how they lived. The kitchen felt closed off and dated, and the adjacent porch was under-insulated and unusable for much of the year.

Project Overview
The homeowners loved their location in St. Andrews, but the layout no longer suited how they lived. The kitchen felt closed off and dated, and the adjacent porch was under-insulated and unusable for much of the year.
Their goal was to create a refined, functional kitchen while transforming the porch into a bright, four-season living space — improving flow, natural light, and overall livability without drastically altering the home’s footprint.
Living Space: Full Porch Rebuild
The existing porch was completely removed and rebuilt from the ground up.
Scope included:\
- New foundation and structural framing
- Full insulation and air sealing
- Energy-efficient window installation
- Vaulted ceiling construction
- Custom wood beam detailing
- Wood stove integration
- Seamless tie-in to the existing structure
Rebuilding allowed us to bring the space up to modern building standards, ensuring long-term performance, efficiency, and structural integrity.
Custom Kitchen Build (Built Entirely In-House)
With the addition underway, we completed a full kitchen transformation:
- Complete demolition of the existing kitchen
- Custom cabinetry build and installation (deep teal lowers, white shaker uppers)
- Oversized island designed for gathering and entertaining
- Quartz countertops throughout
- Classic white tile backsplash
- Stainless steel appliance installation
- Plumbing and electrical upgrades
- Custom lighting plan including pendants and recessed fixtures
- Detailed finish carpentry and trim work
The cabinetry balances bold colour with clean white finishes, creating contrast while maintaining a bright, airy atmosphere. The redesigned layout improves workflow, maximizes storage, and visually connects the kitchen to the new living space.
The Outcome
What was once an aging porch and outdated kitchen is now the heart of the home.
The rebuilt vaulted living space is filled with natural light and architectural warmth. The
custom kitchen anchors the room with rich cabinetry, refined finishes, and an expansive
island designed for gathering.
The home now features:
- Increased usable square footage
- Improved energy performance
- Modern functionality
- A cohesive open-concept layout
- Timeless, high-quality finishes
A Milestone for Our Company
This project marked a significant step forward for Rotalon Custom Homes. While we have completed many structural builds and renovations, this was the first time we designed and built a full custom kitchen entirely in-house.
By taking on cabinetry fabrication, layout execution, installation, and finishing ourselves, we maintained complete control over quality, detailing, and integration with the new addition.
A defining project — and one we’re proud to stand behind.
